Visit Ford for more information on the Ford Escape.

The 2003 Ford Escape is a small, sporty SUV that buzzes around paved streets and tears over off-road paths. Combining the ruggedness of a sport-utility vehicle with an unmatched level of interior comfort, the 2003 Ford Escape is a healthy improvement upon last year's model. Even though it was introduced in 2001, manufacturers have already begun to fine-tune the unique features of the Escape in an effort to further its appeal among SUV shoppers.

Available Models
Part of this appeal lies in the wide selection of Escapes available. There are three editions, XLS, XLT and Limited, and a number of different models within each. The XLS alone occupies the entry-level position in the Escape lineup and offers three models: Value, Sport and Popular.

Interior Features
The four-door, five-passenger 2003 Ford Escape is stylishly laid out on the interior. All Escapes for 2003 have upgraded interior materials for better appearance and feel. The seat fabrics, floor mats and door trim are of higher quality and are available in new patterns and hues. The center stack, door bezels and window switches are painted for a two-tone interior effect, and the window switches are illuminated for nighttime convenience

Though the XLS is inexpensive, it doesn't skimp on the goods. The Value model provides such features as air conditioning, power steering, power mirrors, windows and door locks, remote keyless entry and an AM/FM/cassette/CD player - and that is the base model. Naturally, uplevel models offer even more.

Exterior Features
The Escape's exterior styling has adventure written all over it. With a confidently poised stance with wide body cladding and integrated bumper guards, it almost invites off-roading. In addition, three new colors are available on 2003 Escapes: Aspen Green, Red Fire and Gold Ash.

The Value and Sport models of the XLS edition come with a 2.0-liter I4 engine with 127 horsepower at 5400 rpm and 135 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm. The Popular models offers a 3.0-liter V6 engine with 201 horsepower at 5900 rpm and 196 lb-ft of torque at 4700 rpm, plus an optional all-wheel drive configuration. Two-wheel drive Escapes are front-wheel drive, providing good handling and traction control.

The MacPherson strut front suspension helps isolate road forces, while the independent rear suspension allows lower spring rates for a smooth ride.

Safety and Security
Front fender reinforcement on the Escape helps direct the energy load of a frontal crash between the lower frame rail and an upper path that goes through the roof, away from occupants. Escape XLS also provides front disc and rear drum brakes and dual front airbags.
