Visit Ford for more information on the Ford Explorer.

The 2003 Ford Explorer is the prototypical midsize SUV. Everything from power, comfort, safety and durability are covered in this best-selling vehicle. With the number of improvements for 2003 long and impressive, there isn't much chance the Explorer is going to lose its top standing. Performance, entertainment and style features on the 2003 Ford Explorer have all been given touch-ups, as makers continue the vehicle's evolution with each new year.

Available Models
The XLS and XLT editions occupy the lower half of the 2003 Ford Explorer lineup. Also offered is a new NBX edition, an Eddie Bauer edition and a top-line Limited. Both the XLS and XLT editions have base and Sport models to choose from, adding even more variety to the Explorer selection.

Interior Features
The 2003 Ford Explorer is available with a third-row seat for a maximum seven-passenger capacity. The optional rear seat offers the ability to seat two adults in comfort, as Explorer leads its class in third-row headroom and legroom. Functionality is key, as seven-passenger models also provide a split 40/20/40 second-row seat to offer ease of access to the third row, and the ability to customize the cargo area for long or odd-sized cargo.

A Rear Seat Entertainment System, including a DVD player and outputs for games and headphones, is an option on XLT edition models.

Exterior Features
Key exterior design elements include simple, rounded forms and sections, uncluttered body panels and a bold new grille featuring the familiar egg-crate insert of all Ford SUVs. A fully integrated rear bumper with a wide shelf and a completely redesigned liftgate give the rear of the vehicle a cleaner, finished look. In addition, both Sport models of the XLS and XLT editions feature step bars.

Performance
The standard engine on XLS and XLT editions is a 4.0-liter V6 offering flexible fuel capability and exceptionally quiet operation. It produces 210 horsepower at 5100 rpm and 254lb-ft of torque at 3700 rpm. All XLS and XLT models have 5-speed automatic transmission and are available with two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations.

Owners of XLT editions can upgrade to a 4.6-liter V8 with 239 horsepower at 4750 rpm and 282 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. With independent rear suspension and a porthole-in-frame design, all Explorer models have a smooth ride.

Safety and Security
Ford Explorer leads the mid-size SUV segment in crash test performance as well as in new safety technology. Part of this safety package includes dual front airbags and antilock 4-wheel disc brakes. Other features include rollover protection and improved safety belts.
