Visit Ford for more information on the Ford Escape.

Underneath the fresh, stylish look of the 2003 Ford Escape is a powertrain configuration that has aggressive off-roading and high performance in mind. Designed for younger drivers, or those young at heart, the Escape offers sharp handling and a high level of comfort for adventures on or off the road. On the practical side of things, the Escape is tough, durable, and offers good fuel economy and low emissions.

Available Models
The five-passenger 2003 Ford Escape is presented to customers in a number of different models. The XLT edition slots between the base XLS and top-line Limited, providing a nice blend of standard features at an attractive price. Variety is in abundance, as there are a total of four models within the XLT class alone: Popular, Popular 2, Sport and Premium.

Interior Features
The Escape is designed for practical applications. Convenience, passenger roominess and cargo flexibility are all results of the interior layout. Escape has four doors and a rear liftgate with flip-up glass for access to the cargo area. The cargo area, with the seats up, offers 33 cubic feet of storage space.

Moving up from the Popular model to the XLT Premium gets you more and more standard equipment. With the latter, leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and an AM/FM radio with in-dash 6-disc CD changer are all part of the package.

Exterior Features
Three new colors are available on 2003 Escapes: Aspen Green, Red Fire and Gold Ash. Escape XLT Sport models feature a dual-loading rack system. This No Boundaries Rack System offers a unique sliding rail from the roof that customers can pull down vertically across the rear of the vehicle and lock into the bumper. This provides two separate loading surfaces -one on the roof and one across the rear.

Performance
XLT models offer a 3.0-liter V6 engine with 201 horsepower at 5900 rpm and 196 lb-ft of torque at 4700 rpm. Two-wheel drive is offered, as is an all-wheel drive configuration. Two-wheel drive Escapes are front-wheel drive, providing good handling and traction control, while all-wheel drive models add even more grip for the road.

4-speed automatic transmission does the shifting. The MacPherson strut front suspension helps isolate road forces, while the independent rear suspension allows lower spring rates for a smooth ride.

Safety and Security
XLT models have four channel antilock brakes and dual front airbags. In addition, an energy-absorbing steering column works with energy-absorbing knee bolsters to reduce the risk of injuries for front-seat occupants. Standard high-tensile-steel side-intrusion door beams help protect passengers in side impacts.
