"It's everything we know how to do, done all at once," Volkswagen asserts as they unveil the 2003 Volkswagen Passat with renewed poise and self-assurance. Last year the Passat acquired accolade as the first car in its Volkswagen class to install an eight-cylinder engine, coined as the W8. This year, we see the introduction of an entry-level 4-cylinder model.

Available Models
Choose from three trim levels: GLS, GLS V6, or GLX. The GLS and GLS V6 can be further customized with one of three special packages. The Luxury Package includes power sunroof, rear sunshade, alloy wheels, and anti-theft wheel locks. The Cold Weather Package includes heatable front seats, and heated windshield washer nozzles. And to the Cold Weather Package, the Leather Package adds a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, and leather trimmed seats.

Interior Features
Standard interior features of the 2003 Volkswagen Passat GLS and GLS V6 include air conditioning, pollen and dust filter, eight-speaker cassette stereo system, in-dash CD player, trip computer, cruise control, and a cooled illuminated lockable glove box. Inside the GLX, further avails include a sleek wood-trimmed interior, and Monsoon stereo system. Nothing is left out inside the GLX. Other standard features for the GLX include heatable eight-way power front seats, three-position memory on the driver's seat, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, self-dimming rear view mirror, and power sunroof.

Exterior Features
The base 2003 Volkswagen Passat GLS and GLS V6 models offer standard exterior features such as heated power remote mirrors, clear lens halogen head lamps, and projector lens fog lamps integrated into front bumper. Upgrades can include any of the packages mentioned above in the Available Models section. The GLX dishes up standard extras like rain-sensing wipers, heated windshield washer nozzles, and alloy wheels.

Performance
V + V = W. Take two Volkswagen V engines, fuse them together, and you get the new surprisingly compact W8. The W8 engine is undoubtedly the Passat's biggest and best move thus far under the hood. It produces 270 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque for a powerful yet elegant ride. You can find this W8 engine in the GLX model, which can also house the V6 engine if you so desire.

Also available to the 2003 Volkswagen Passat GLS and GLS V6 models is the 4-cylinder, 1.8-litre, 170 horsepower engine with 166 lb-ft of torque, and the V6, 2.8-litre engine pumping out 190 horsepower and 206 lb-ft of torque. The Passat comes with an automatic 5-speed transmission that also offers 'Tiptronic' manual mode capabilities. Unleaded fuel mileage runs at 21/30 (city/hwy) mpg for the 5-speed automatic 1.8-litre engine, and 20/27 (city/hwy) mpg for the 5-speed automatic V6 engine.

Safety and Security
Outstanding safety can be found here in the 2003 Volkswagen Passat. Each of the four doors has its own impacting steel beam inside to protect all passengers equally. The Passat is literally full of airbags, from front-impact bags, and side-impact bags neatly tucked away inside the front seats, to the side curtain airbags strategically set to inflate from above the doors to provide yet another layer of cushioning between the cabin and any uninvited guests.

Volkswagen's optional 4MOTION™ all-wheel drive system, which balances torque between all four wheels, teams up with Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) that controls the ABS brakes to constantly maximize traction. Volkswagen takes 'drive safe' to new levels of respect, and the Passat is no exception.
