The 2004 Pontiac Sunfire is the smallest vehicle in the
Pontiac family, a subcompact that follows the Pontiac creed
to deliver pure driving excitement. Like other models from
the division, it strives to be a driver's car above all
Of all Pontiacs, however, the Sunfire is the vehicle most
aimed at younger buyers. Its motto is this: to be fun, stylish
and affordable. Ideal for college students or people who
just like a nice, zippy ride, the Sunfire is more than just
flash. 2004 sees a few minor changes, including a newly
available sound system.
Pontiac labels the 2004 Sunfire's standard equipment package
as the 1SA Option Group. Following close behind are 1SB
and 1SC groups.
The two-door 2004 Pontiac Sunfire is a coupe that seats
five passengers, though four is perhaps more realistic when
dealing with full-size adults. The Sunfire also has a 60/40
split-folding rear seat, giving owners increased cargo-carrying
The base SE model with the 1SA option group is rather bare.
However, ascending to the 1SC group really decks out the
Sunfire. It includes such things as a leather-wrapped steering
wheel, a leather-wrapped shifter and parking brake, cruise
control, sport bucket seats with driver-side power lumber
adjustment and satellite radio.
New for 2004 is a CD/MP3 player with equalizer and Radio
Data System. With the MP3 format, you are given hours of
listening pleasure-perfect for those long, arduous journeys
you may have to make.
The Sunfire's sleek lines show off cat-eye headlamps and
integrated turn signals. Inset fog lamps and a split-grille
further distinguish the sporty nature of the vehicle.
The 2004 Pontiac Sunfire is a front-wheel drive car. All
models use a 2.2-liter Ecotec inline 4-cylinder engine with
140 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 150 lb-ft of torque at 4000
rpm. Thanks to twin balance shafts located in the cylinder
block, the engine drives very quietly. At 305 pounds, the
Ecotec 2.2-liter is the lightest and most compact engine
GM has produced in its class.
5-speed Getrag manual transmission is standard on the base
model, while a Hydra-Matic 4T45-E electronically controlled
4-speed automatic is standard on the other models. An Enhanced
Traction System, standard with the 4-speed automatic transmission
in the top-of-the-line Sunfire, aids with safety and performance.
Safety and Security
The 2004 Pontiac Sunfire is safer than ever. Dual front
airbags are standard, while seat-mounted side airbags for
front-seat passengers are optional. An available Protection
Package features side airbags and the OnStar communications
and security service.
