Visit Chevrolet for more information on the Chevy Suburban.

Few full-size sport utility vehicles are as rugged as the Chevy Suburban. It has been around a while; the makers at Chevy hope that it stays around for quite a bit longer. Then again, so too do most of its owners.

The ½-ton 2004 Chevy Suburban 1500 is cousin to GMC's Yukon XL. They share many of the same components, but the Suburban is still its own vehicle. It has new standard equipment that addresses both style and safety, including a right front passenger seat belt reminder.

Available Models
The 2004 Chevy Suburban 1500 comes in two trim levels: LS and LT. Larger Suburban 2500 models are covered in a separate review.

Interior Features
The four-door 2004 Chevy Suburban has a standard third-row bench seat, resulting in a maximum occupancy of nine passengers. For goods, the 2004 Suburban 1500 has 131.6 cubic feet of cargo volume.

An available tri-zone automatic HVAC system can replace the standard manual system. Customers can also opt for a sunroof and rear entertainment system with rear electronic climate control. This system automatically controls air delivery, fan speed, temperature and recirculating/outside air to provide faster warm-ups and cool-downs.

The LT model is truly an upscale vehicle. It has such standard features as the OnStar system, a Bose AM/FM radio with in-dash 6-disc CD changer, leather upholstery, heated front seats, power-adjustable pedals, steering wheel radio controls and a driver information center.

Exterior Features
A whole new set of tires are available for 2004. 16-inch cast aluminum wheels are offered; 17-inch five-spoke aluminum wheels with a 16-inch steel blackwall spare are available on LT models. New tire selections include 17-inch all-season P265/70R17 blackwall tires and 17-inch all-season, P265/70R17white outlined-letter tires.

Performance
Two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations are both available. The engine under the hood is a 5.3-liter Vortec V8 with 295 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. It is mated to a 4-speed electronic automatic transmission.

StabiliTrak is offered with 2004 Chevy Suburban ½-ton models. If the system determines that the vehicle is not responding appropriately to the driver's steering, StabiliTrak precisely reduces engine torque and applies precise amounts of pressure to the individual front brakes to slow the vehicle and help bring it back to its intended path.

Safety and Security
The 2004 Chevy Suburban 1500 has a host of new safety features, including Hydroboost brakes and a tire-pressure monitor. Advanced dual-stage airbags, the LATCH child seat system and daytime running lights are also standard.
