The king of the crossover vehicle is back for 2004 with new colors and more standard equipment than ever. Though there aren't any groundbreaking changes for this model still in its infant stages, that isn't to say that there is some slacking going on at Chevrolet. After all, the Avalanche is the model that started the crossover SUV/pickup truck craze.

The 2004 Chevy Avalanche is offered in ½-ton and ¾-ton models. Two-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations for both sizes are available. What is standard is segment-bending versatility, strength, durability and comfort, all at a reasonable price.

Available Models
The 2004 Chevy Avalanche lineup is broken down according to size. There is a 1500 model and a larger 2500 model.

Interior Features
The midgate system continues to be the defining interior/exterior feature of the 2004 Chevy Avalanche. With the rear seat and midgate up, there is room for a total of six.

The 2004 Chevy Avalanche has adjustable brake and accelerator pedals. They can be moved rearward in unison by nearly 3 inches for better positioning and comfort. In addition, they are also available with a memory feature.

Exterior Features
The Convert-a-Cab System increases the Avalanche's cargo bed from 5.3 ft to 8.1 ft. Two storage compartments (with drains) on either side of the cargo bed provide a combined 3.5 cubic feet of lockable storage space. A three-piece rigid cargo cover with interlocking panels is also available.

Performance
1500 models feature a 5.3-liter Vortec V8 engine capable of producing 295 horsepower at 5200 rpm and 330 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. 2500 models are brawnier; their engine is an 8.1-liter Vortec V8 with 320 horsepower at 4200 rpm and 445 lb-ft of torque at 3200 rpm.

2500s also come with heavy-duty suspension for more ruggedness. Both engines are mated to 4-speed electronic automatic transmission.

Owners of 2WD 1500 models can opt for a Z66 On-Road Package. This includes the StabiliTrak system, limited-slip differential and upgraded load-leveling rear suspension.

Safety and Security
1500 models receive standard Hydroboost brakes for 2004, which provides more reserve power for emergency braking situations. Other safety features on the Chevy Avalanche include dual front airbags, side airbags, daytime running lights and the LATCH system for child seats.
