The highly competitive Mazda Protégé Sedan has turned up the volume in the performance department and has spruced up its outward appearance with a slew of aesthetic improvements. Additionally, the interior sports some extra features to round out this exceptional vehicle in comfort and luxury.

Available Models
Heading up the outstanding line of 2002 vehicles is the Protégé DX Sedan, Protégé LX Sedan, and the Protégé ES Sedan. Each offers upward movement in both the performance and luxury categories.

Interior Features
The redesigned Protégé features white-faced gauges, modular AM/FM stereo with CD players, revamped center panel, better cupholders, and a brand new center console with storage bins and dual front map lights. The interior is finished in two-tone trim in either gray or beige, and the handy 60/40 split folding rear seat accommodates extra cargo and headlines a locking feature.

Higher models add on air conditioning, cruise control, power windows, power door locks, and the like. The Protégé Sedan is notable for its highly spacious interior.

Exterior Features

Curbside attractions include a standard black-chrome grille, sporty rear spoiler, front fog lights, and fifteen-inch steel wheels. Fifteen-inch alloy wheels are optional on the Protégé LX model, and standard on the Protégé ES model. Body-color dual outside mirrors are standard fare on the LX and ES as well.

Performance
The 2002 Protégé Sedan has replaced a previous smaller engine with a 2.0-litre I-4 engine that produces 130 horsepower. Brakes are four-wheel disc on the ES, and are available as an option on the DX and LX models. A reinforced body/chassis structure lends itself to increased stability and control, with a more comfortable and quiet ride.

The reliable MacPherson strut continues to be the suspension of choice up front, while the rear sports a twin-trapezoidal link design. Each vehicle is built with front and rear stabilizer bars, which are more rigid on the upper-end Protégé ES Sedan for sharper cornering.

Safety and Security
Each Mazda Protégé Sedan is fully equipped with a wide array of safety features, including Triple-H roof, B-pillar, and floor reinforcements that facilitate the absorption of side impacts and rollovers. As well, each vehicle features standards such as three-point seatbelts, child safety seat tethers and anchors, and optional driver's side air bag and passenger's side air bags on the LX and ES models.

The Protégé is also bolstered by four-wheel anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution, which varies the amount of rear-wheel braking force depending on the vehicle's load for enhanced braking capabilities.
