Visit Land Rover for more information on the Land Rover Discovery.

The 2003 Land Rover Discovery is the middle child of this manufacturer, falling between the smaller Freelander and the traditional full-size Range Rover. Built in England, this all-wheel drive off-road machine is oriented toward function and utility yet it nevertheless presents a high level of interior amenity and luxury content.

This year sees more power, styling refinement and general improvement through 368 different design changes. This is a new generation of Discovery, not merely the same vehicle as last year with a new year stamped in the doorframe.

Available Models
The 2003 Land Rover Discovery comes in a base S, SE or top-level HSE model, each distinguished by increased or improved interior content.

Interior Features
Inside the S edition, although the base model, a solid standard of functional amenity is available. For example, all models have eight-way power-adjustable driver seats, dual-zone automatic climate control system and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. The instrument pod has been replaced for 2003 by one with new gauge graphics and a more contemporary look.

Among other things the SE trim level upgrades the interior with burled walnut wood trim, leather seating surfaces and dual electric sunroofs. At the HSE level, sophisticated electronics add more value with Harmon Kardon premium audio and an in-dash navigation system.

Exterior Features
Classic Land Rover styling continues to be the order of the day with the 2003 Land Rover Discovery. Its expansive raised greenhouse stepped roof design has been enhanced with a new front-end design akin to that of the iconic Range Rover.

Alpine windows and an open airy feeling, overall ruggedness and extensive exterior functionality, including a roof rack, integrated fog lights, Class IV trailer hitch and six-spoke 16 or 18-inch wheels, all contribute to value for the consumer.

Performance
One of the major areas of development for the 2003 Land Rover Discovery has been under the hood. A powerful 4.6-liter V8 engine has 30 more hp than the 4.0-liter it replaces with 217hp at 4750 rpm. It is also rated at 300lb-ft of torque, from 2600 rpm, meaning there is plenty of towing power.

All this power is teamed to a ZF electronically controlled, four-speed automatic transmission offering Normal, Sport and Manual modes. A two-speed transfer case with High and Low Range gearing adds even more capability and versatility, making this SUV truly at home off-road.

Safety and Security
Extensive safety equipment throughout the Land Rover line are present in full measure on all versions of the Discovery.

Passive safety technology includes dual front airbags, and state of the art three-point belts with pretensioners in all outboard positions.

Active or preventative innovations include 4-wheel electronic traction control (4ETC) and 4-wheel vented disc brakes with all-terrain ABS and Land Rover's electronic brake force distribution.

New for the 2003 Land Rover Discovery

Britain's Land Rover has made substantial improvements to its Discovery model for the 2003 model year to improve power, refinement and interior comfort.
The distinctive Discovery profile with its stepped roof design has been enhanced with a new front-end design that is similar to the 2003 Range Rover. A larger, more powerful V8 engine has been added exclusively for the North American market.
There are interior upgrades featuring two new colors and seat stitch patterns, which create an inviting, modern look to the passenger compartment.
Overall refinement has been achieved through 368 engineering changes, as well as extensive quality control and manufacturing process improvements. And to make owning a Discovery hassle-free, the vehicle is covered for six scheduled maintenances during the warranty period.
Highlighting the list of upgrades is an impressive 15 percent increase in power from a larger 4.6-litre 217hp, aluminum V8 engine - 30hp more than the 4.0-litre V8 it replaces. The substantial increases in power and torque result in a more responsive and refined driving experience throughout the engine’s full range of operation. Combined with improved body mounts, a second exhaust resonator and revised exhaust pipe routings, there is a noticeable reduction in levels of interior noise and vibration.
