With the exception of (perhaps) the new Cadillac SRX, there's
isn't a wagon around that can come close to matching the
performance ability of the all-new Volvo V70 R model. Lurking
under its hood is a 300-horsepower engine that will get
you where you want to go faster than you thought possible.
The new R concept is one that finds its way into a few
other Volvo models for 2004. It opens up a whole new realm
to Volvo, merging high functionality and safety with pure,
heart-racing performance. Quite a merger of styles, with
the fruits all landing in the buyer's lap.
Even though it is a wagon, the V70 is still a driver's
car. Large, distinct analog gauges and instruments provide
quick and easy access to information, while all controls
lie within a natural and comfortable range of the hands
and fingers.
Available Models
The 2004 Volvo V70 is offered in four trims: 2.4, 2.5T,
T5 and R. 2.4 and 2.5T models are covered separately.
Interior Features
For 2004, the interior of the V70 wagon has been upgraded
for a more refined look and feel. V70 models now feature
a charcoal-colored trim and watch-bezel-style instrument
surrounds.
The V70 is highly functional, as a wagon should be. It
has two-position, split 60/40-fold down rear seats. The
front passenger seat also folds down, creating up to 71.4
cu. ft. of carpeted cargo area.
Both models have a tilt/telescoping leather-wrapped steering
wheel with radio controls, cruise control, air conditioning
with dual-zone automatic climate controls and much more.
Exterior Features
The new R has a rear spoiler that hints at what it can do.
Performance
The 2004 Volvo V70 T5 is no longer the performance king
in the V70 family. However, its 2.3-liter turbocharged inline
5-cylinder engine still generates 247 horsepower at 5200
rpm and 243 lb-ft of torque at 2400 rpm.
The new 2004 Volvo V70 R is equipped with a 2.5-liter turbocharged
inline 5-cylinder engine. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard,
while 5-speed automatic is optional. The result: 300 horsepower
at 5250 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque at 1950 rpm (258 lb-ft
of torque with automatic transmission).
In addition to power, the R model also uses the Volvo Four
C (Continuously Control Chassis Concept). It compensates
for road variances using a sophisticated network of sensors,
Volvo's Haldex all-wheel-drive system and the DSTC (Dynamic
Stability and Traction Control) system.
Safety and Security
The safety features for 2004 include front side airbags,
curtain side airbags, traction control, an antiskid system,
front-seat active head restraints and antilock 4-wheel disc
brakes.
