Dual Sport versions of the Mazda B-Series compact pickup
truck are given their name because they are models that
can really handle two types of road driving. They come with
a rear-wheel drive setup, but on top of that they use a
four-wheel-drive-like raised suspension.
The result is a compact pickup truck that can essentially
go off the road and back on the road without missing a beat.
However, because it doesn't have a true four-wheel drive
setup, the Dual Sport shouldn't be used for heavy off-road
situations.
As Mazda is under the Ford umbrella, the B-Series is given
the same platform as Ford's compact pickup truck, the Ranger.
However, the two models do have some different features.
Available Models
Dual Sport B-Series models are offered in two configurations:
B3000 and B4000. In addition to the Dual Sport, there are
also base and SE models (covered separately).
Interior Features
Dual Sport models are available in two configurations for
2004: Cab Plus and Cab Plus 4. Both are extended cabs, with
the Cab Plus 4 offering two rear-hinged rear doors that
don't open without the front doors.
This year, the new B-Series gets a revised center dashboard
and a new steering wheel. The front is now a bit cleaner-looking,
while the new steering wheel is easier to grip and turn.
The B-Series has a moderate price that is reflective of
the equally moderate amount of standard features given to
the models. Dual Sport versions come with such features
as cloth upholstery, a floor consolette, black vinyl floor
covering, rear privacy glass, air conditioning and an AM/FM/CD
player.
Exterior Features
In addition, both Dual Sport models have all-terrain tires
and alloy wheels. Options include a bedliner, a bed extender,
side steps and a tonneau cover.
Performance
The Dual Sport comes with two different engines that are
hinted at by the names of the models. For example, the B3000
has a 3.0-liter V6 engine. It offers up to 154 horsepower
and 180 lb-ft of torque.
At the top of the hill in terms of power and performance
is the B4000. It comes with a 4.0-lliter V6 with 207 horsepower
and 238 lb-ft of torque.
Like other 2004 Mazda B-Series trucks, Dual Sport models
can be had with either 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic
transmission.
Safety and Security
All 2004 Mazda B-Series trucks receive dual front airbags
and antilock brakes.
