The Ford E-Series has been around for forty years, providing customers with hard-working vans that offer exceptional spaciousness and reliable performance. The Econoline lineup is as plentiful as it is versatile. With models designed for commercial, recreational and family use, manufacturers have spread the Econoline influence over the entire spectrum of the full-size van segment.

Available Models
The commercial fleet of the E-Series keeps to this philosophy of variety. Commercial vans come in ½-ton E-150, ¾-ton E-250 and 1-ton E-350 chassis. E-250 and 350s offer regular or extended-length bodies, while the E-150 comes in regular length only.

Interior Features
Behind the two vinyl front buckets seats on commercial models is a large cargo hold designed with business owners in mind. While the driver and passenger benefit from front air conditioning, power steering, an AM/FM radio and a digital clock, it is the load-carrying capabilities that set commercials models apart.
With this in mind, manufacturers offer two different storage systems at no extra charge. An EconoCargo System helps protect cargo with durable panels of high-density, insulated polyethylene. The liner materials resist acids, gasoline, salt, fertilizers, cleaners, insecticides and many solvents. A Racks and Bins System is also offered. Ideal for customers who must secure tools and parts, it features fully installed steel shelving, drawers and cabinets, and a full-width safety partition provides work area access from the passenger compartment

Exterior Features
A new grille and new exterior colors lead the exterior styling changes for 2003. The base grille features an integrated Ford emblem and is molded in color, textured and surrounds sealed-beam halogen headlamps.

The new color scheme of the 2003 Econoline further adds to the impressive selection. Merlot, Mineral Gray and Silver Birch models rolling off the line give the Econoline a fresh look on the job.

Performance
When it comes to available engines, manufacturers have perhaps overestimated the diversity of customer needs. The result is a whopping total of five different engines to choose from, all boasting power. The standard engine is a 4.2-liter V6 with 191 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 244 lb-ft of torque at 2750 rpm.

The first optional engine in terms of power is a 4.6-liter V8 with 225 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 286 lb-ft of torque at 3500 rpm. The second is a 5.4-liter V8 with 255 horsepower at 4500 rpm and 350 lb-ft of torque at 2500 rpm. The last two are only offered with E-350 models. They are a 6.8-liter V10 with 305 horsepower at 4250 rpm and 420 lb-ft of torque at 3250 rpm and a 7.3-liter turbo-diesel V8 with 215 horsepower at 2600 rpm and 425 lb-ft of torque at 1800 rpm.

Safety and Security
With side-door intrusion beams adding additional protection in certain side collisions, the commercial fleet of the Econoline series is very sturdily constructed to protect all cargo, human and otherwise. Dual front airbags are standard, while four-wheel antilock brakes handle hard-braking situations.
